Editor's take on FlashAttention
Fits ML teams training or serving transformers on CUDA or ROCm GPUs that need faster, lower-memory attention without changing model code beyond swapping the kernel. The trade-off is hardware and version coupling: the newest generation is beta for Hopper and needs a recent CUDA toolkit and PyTorch release, Blackwell support is early, and the library provides speed and memory savings rather than any energy measurement. Published throughput gains are vendor-reported, so a buyer's own throughput and power draw need testing. Teams on unsupported accelerators, or without a build toolchain, should check compatibility first.

Fits teams already training or serving Hugging Face models that need them exported or optimised for a specific accelerator, with integrations covering ONNX Runtime, OpenVINO, TensorRT-LLM, AMD Instinct, Trainium, Inferentia, Gaudi and FuriosaAI. The trade-off is breadth versus depth: each backend carries its own hardware and version constraints, so the usable subset depends on the target stack, and Optimum reports no energy or carbon figures itself. Efficiency gains appear as less compute per task, which has to be measured separately. Teams wanting a supported end-to-end serving platform should look at vendor offerings.
