Choosing DCIM that reports sustainability data

What to require from data centre infrastructure management when the sustainability report needs per-rack power and PUE, not just capacity planning.

Data centre reporting starts as an infrastructure problem and becomes a finance problem. The sustainability team needs PUE, energy per site and, increasingly, per-customer or per-workload allocation, while the facilities team already has a DCIM tool built for capacity, change management and asset tracking. Adding sustainability to that tool is usually cheaper than buying a second platform, but only if the DCIM actually meters power at the granularity the report needs. DCIM products differ on whether PUE is calculated from measured branch circuit data or inferred from nameplate values, whether they ingest building management and cooling telemetry, and whether they expose an API for the reporting stack. For liquid-cooled halls there is a further question: whether the tool can attribute coolant loop energy and heat reuse. The criteria below are the ones that decide whether the existing platform can carry the report or whether a separate energy monitoring layer is needed.

What to evaluate

  1. 1

    Measured power versus nameplate

Ask whether rack and circuit power come from meters and PDUs or from nameplate assumptions. A PUE built on nameplate values will not survive an audit or a customer's own measurement.

  2. 2

    PUE calculation boundary

Confirm what the tool counts as IT load and what it counts as facility load, and whether cooling, pumps and liquid loops are included. Two tools can report different PUEs on the same hall for boundary reasons alone.

  3. 3

    Telemetry from cooling and plant

Check which BMS, chiller and CDU protocols are supported. Without cooling telemetry the efficiency figure covers only part of the hall.

  4. 4

    API and reporting export

Require an API or scheduled export that the sustainability or finance team can consume, with historical granularity preserved. A dashboard-only tool forces manual transcription every reporting cycle.

  5. 5

    Allocation to customers or workloads

If the report needs per-customer or per-workload emissions, check whether the tool can allocate energy by rack, tenant or job, and how it treats shared overhead such as cooling and lighting.
