Use case
How mid-market teams should evaluate tools that structure a CSRD double materiality assessment and keep the evidence behind it.

The double materiality assessment is the gate that decides what a CSRD report contains, and it is the first thing an assurance provider asks to see. CSRD requires companies in scope to report using a double materiality perspective in compliance with the ESRS, which means assessing both the company's impacts on people and environment and the financial effects of sustainability matters on the company. For a mid-market reporter or a subsidiary preparing its first statement, the assessment is usually run once, under time pressure, by a team that has never documented a methodology before.
The inputs are varied and hard to defend. Internal workshops produce candidate impacts, risks and opportunities; customers, suppliers, employees and NGOs provide external views; finance supplies the magnitude and time horizon of financial effects; legal and procurement add value chain context. Each candidate then needs a severity and likelihood judgement for impact materiality and a financial materiality judgement, recorded against a defined scale, and mapped to the ESRS sub-topics and datapoints that the final report must address. Most teams start in a spreadsheet and discover only later that the scores have no definitions and the stakeholder evidence was never written down.
The failures are methodological. Scores are assigned without a published scale or threshold, the same workshop is treated as stakeholder consultation, impacts are mapped to ESRS topics only loosely, and there is no version history when the assessment is revised after auditor feedback. The following year nobody can reproduce why a topic was dropped, which is exactly the question an assurance provider will ask.
Evaluate tools on scoring methodology, the impact-risk-opportunity register, ESRS datapoint mapping, stakeholder evidence, audit trail and reassessment.
1
Impact and financial materiality scoring
The tool should define scales and thresholds for severity, likelihood and irreversibility on the impact side and for magnitude and time horizon on the financial side, and require a written rationale for each score.
2
IRO register and ESRS mapping
Each impact, risk and opportunity should map to the relevant ESRS sub-topics and datapoints, with gaps flagged, so the assessment directly drives the disclosure checklist instead of producing a separate document.
3
Stakeholder evidence capture
Record who was consulted, when, in what format and with what weight, so the assessment shows real engagement with affected stakeholders rather than an internal workshop labelled as consultation.
4
Value chain and sector context
Look for structured inputs on suppliers, customers and sector standards, with sources and dates attached, rather than a generic topic checklist that ignores where the company actually operates.
5
Audit trail and assurance readiness
Version history, approvals and methodology documentation should let an assurance provider test how conclusions were reached and see what changed after review, with an export of the register and evidence.
6
Reassessment and year-over-year comparison
The second assessment should start from the first, show what moved and why, and handle changes in ESRS requirements without rebuilding the whole exercise in a new workbook.
