Proving hourly clean energy matching for a PPA

How to evidence hourly renewable matching and PPA performance when a buyer, bank or disclosure asks for more than an annual certificate.

Annual renewable energy certificates are no longer enough for a growing set of buyers. A customer asking for 24/7 carbon-free energy, a lender testing a PPA against its modelled profile, or a CSRD disclosure describing energy procurement all need the same thing: hourly evidence that generation and consumption match, with the settlement data behind it. The work splits into two problems. The first is data: hourly generation from the asset, hourly consumption from meters or the utility, and the certificates or contracts that tie them together. The second is methodology: which matching rule is claimed, how unmatched hours are treated, and whether the residual mix is disclosed. Neither problem is solved by a dashboard alone, because the buyer or auditor will ask for the series underneath the summary. Platforms built for this are usually either certificate and settlement ledgers, or market analytics tools that model a PPA before it is signed. The criteria below cover both, because a company usually needs the analytics decision first and the evidence trail afterwards.

What to evaluate

  1. 1

    Hourly settlement data sources

Check which meter, utility and asset feeds the platform ingests and at what granularity. A tool that reconciles monthly invoices cannot evidence hourly matching regardless of its interface.

  2. 2

    Matching rule and residual disclosure

Require a stated matching rule, a definition of unmatched hours and a disclosure of the residual mix used. Without those three, an hourly claim cannot be compared with a buyer's own definition.

  3. 3

    PPA modelling before signature

If the contract is not signed yet, compare the capture-price and cannibalisation modelling each tool offers, and whether it uses market prices from a named source.

  4. 4

    Certificate and registry linkage

Establish how the platform links generation to certificates issued in a registry, and whether it can show the retirement evidence that an auditor will ask for.

  5. 5

    Reporting outputs

Confirm the report formats a buyer or lender expects, including hourly exports where the claim is hourly, and whether the export carries the underlying data rather than a summary.
