PowerAPI

Python toolkit for building software-defined power meters at application and container level.

Verified 2026-10-22

Overview

PowerAPI is a Python toolkit from Inria and the University of Lille for building software-defined power meters. It reports power consumption at different granularity levels — global, virtual machine, container, application, process or code — without additional physical power meters, and its actor-based architecture allows custom plugins for estimation, storage and export. The project is open source under the BSD 3-Clause licence and is sponsored by Inria, Orange Labs, OVHcloud and La Poste Groupe.

Use cases

  • Estimate application power consumption without hardware meters
  • Meter container or virtual machine power use
  • Measure energy consumption at code level
  • Feed power data into carbon reporting
